TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) alumnus Got Stormy makes her third start of 2020 in the $75,000 Powder Break Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The one-mile turf contest is one of three stakes on the Gulfstream card, and goes as Race 9.
Dual Grade 1 winner Got Stormy went on a tear last year, winning the De La Rose at Saratoga before conquering males seven days later in the Grade 1 Fourstardave. She went on to run second as the favorite in both the Woodbine Mile (G1) and Breeders’ Cup before adding the Matriarch (G1) at Del Mar to her resume. The Mark Casse-trainee was most recently seen running second by just a neck in the Frank E Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita on March 7.
Got Stormy, a five-year-old mare by Get Stormy who has earned over $1.5 million, faces a challenge from Noor Sahara (Ire) on the rail. Trainer Chad Brown debuts the Irish-bred, French-raced daughter of Lope de Vega (Ire), who was a stakes winner at Longchamp a year ago. She did not fare well in Grade 1 company, but has been training steadily since her arrival here over this winter and Irad Ortiz, Jr climbs aboard.
Tapit Today came off a 16-month layoff to win an allowance at Tampa Bay Downs before running third in the Sawnee River (G3) here February 8. This is Brown’s second entrant, who will have Dylan Davis aboard. She has run on this course twice without a win, but the first time was sprinting in her debut.
Todd Pletcher’s Valiance is unbeaten in three starts. The Tapit daughter has not run since June 30 of last year, but did break her maiden on this course last April. She was a stakes winner at Monmouth Park in June, and has had eight works to prepare for this.
Also on the card is the $100,000 Musical Romance for older fillies and mares, and the $75,000 Roar Stakes for sophomore colts. Lady’s Island, who has won 10 of her last 12 starts, heads the Musical Romance for Florida-breds. Green Light Go, a Grade 2 winner and Grade 1 placed in New York last year, is favored in the Roar Stakes, but With Verve will be tough exiting a win in the Hutcheson on February 29. The race goes as the sixth of a card of 11.
