Enable Eyes History Again

The great racemare and 2018 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) heroine Enable is back in action Saturday at Ascot where she will face just two rivals in her attempt to win a record third King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The £400,000 guaranteed race over 1 mile, three furlongs, and 211 yards is a beloved test of champions in England, and has been won by the likes of Galileo, Swain, Nashwan, Dancing Brave, and Nijinsky. Enable won it in 2017 and 2019.
The Juddmonte homebred by Nathaniel had won 12 in a row, including the Prix de l’Arc de Troimphe twice, before she was upset by Waldgeist in the 2019 edition of that French championship. She skipped the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita and trained up to a delayed 2020 debut, the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown. The John Gosden-trainee finished second in that 1 ¼-mile race behind the leading runner through the spring and summer, Ghaiyyath. This distance and having a prep under her belt should suit Enable better. She will be ridden once again by Frankie Dettori.
Opposing her are two runners from the Ballydoyle outfit of Aidan O’Brien. Both are sons of Galileo: Japan and Sovereign.
Sovereign won the 2019 Irish Derby (G1) but then was off for 364 days, reappearing as a four-year-old in a Group 3 at the Curragh June 27. He finished third, beaten three lengths, but likely needed the prep for this and get William Buick aboard.
Ryan Moore will be up on Japan, who is considered Enable’s biggest threat to winning. A five-time winner in 11 tries, Japan won the Juddmonte International (G1) by a head last year and finished fourth in the Arc. He was third behind Ghaiyyath and Enable last out and looks to make amends here.
TVG will be broadcasting the race live, and is pleased to announce that residents in Michigan can now watch and wager on live horse racing.
