Entropia (ARG) Scores 70-1 Upset in Gran Premio Criadores in Argentina and Gains First Automatic Berth into 2019 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff

By Diego H. Mitagstein, Turf Diario

BUENOS AIRES (May 2, 2019) - Stud El Quinton Lobos’s Entropia (ARG) shocked the holiday crowd Wednesday afternoon at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo in Argentina, taking the 1 ¼-mile Gran Premio Criadores (G1) for fillies and mares on dirt by one length over favored Seas Alabada (ARG) and became the first horse to gain an automatic berth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff through the international Breeders’ Cup Challenge.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is an international series of 86 stakes races whose winners receive free berths and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on November 1-2.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders’ Cup will pay the entry fees for the Entropia to start in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff.  Breeders’ Cup will also provide a $40,000 travel allowance for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

"This was an unforgettable moment for me,” said Enrique Piccardo of Stud El Quinton Lobos. “The filly gave us a big effort and Valle was great in the irons. Let's go for the Distaff now. It is a dream come true for all of us.”

Entropia, a 3-year-old filly by Mount Nelson (GB) out of Embrace Her (ARG) by Editor’s Note, trained by Jorge Meyrelles and ridden by Martin Valle, won her third race in eight career starts, and earned her first Group 1 victory.

Breaking from post 6 in a 15-horse field, Entropia was kept well off the pace by Valle up the backstretch, racing third from last along the inside. But exiting the final turn, she swung wide out of a tight pack and steadily gained ground against 11 rivals to her inside. Down along the rail, Stud R.M.’s City and the Sex (ARG) forged to the lead with a quarter-mile remaining. To her right in the center of the track, Seas Alabada was also making a serious bid. As the three fillies approached the wire, Entropia had just a bit more to prevail. City and the Sex finished just a nose back in third behind Seas Alabada.

Entropia, bred in Argentina by Rodeo Chico, completed the 1 ¼ miles in 2:00.15 over a fast track.
Entropia came into the Gran Premio Criadores off a seventh-place finish in the 1 3/8-mile Gran Premio Gilberto Lerena (G1) at Palermo on April 6. She finished fourth prior to that in the 1 ¼ mile Clasico Arturo R. and Arturo Bullrich (G2) on March 9 at Palermo.

The Gran Premio Criadores was the second of five Breeders’ Cup Challenge races to be run in South America for the 2019 season.  Il Mercato (ARG) qualified for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf when he won the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1) last December at San Isidro.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, now in its 13th year, will be held at many of the world’s premier racetracks in 11 countries:  Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, England, France, Japan, Ireland, Peru, South Africa and the United States.
Argentina has produced four Breeders' Cup Champions: Invasor, 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic; Bayakoa, 1989, ’90 Breeders’ Cup Distaff; Paseana, 1992 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Calidoscopio, 2012 Breeders’ Cup Marathon. The latter took the Marathon at Santa Anita Park after having qualified at Palermo vía the Challenge Series.
