Isabella Giles Powers Clear in Shadwell Rockfel Stakes to Secure Her Place in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
Clive Cox’s 2-Year-Old Filly Dominates at Newmarket
NEWMARKET, ENGLAND (Sep. 25, 2020) – Paul & Clare Rooney’s Isabella Giles (IRE) confirmed herself to be one of the leading 2-year-old fillies in Europe, as she comfortably won Friday’s Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmarket. Her 2-length victory secures a guaranteed start in the US$1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) as part of the “Win and You’re In” international Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is comprised of more than 80 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into corresponding races of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, on Nov. 6-7.
Isabella Giles, a bay daughter of Belardo (IRE) out of the Dubawi (IRE) mare Majestic Dubai (GB), had relished the step up to 7-furlongs when winning the Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes (G3) at Goodwood in her latest start and made use of her stamina once again. Under regular rider Adam Kirby, Isabella Giles took on hot-favourite Monday (USA) for the lead early in the race. She quickly found herself in front, a position she never looked like relinquishing.
It was a first success in the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes for Clive Cox, with the trainer also set to saddle the favourite, Cobh (IRE), in tomorrow’s Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (G2), the second of two “Win and You’re In” races at Newmarket this week.
Cox said: “I’m delighted with that performance. She’s a joy to deal with and she keeps progressing in the right way.”
When asked about Isabella Giles’ future plans, Cox added: “We’ll see how she comes out of this race before committing to any targets. She takes her racing really well but she’s a filly for next year.”
Last year’s Rockfel winner, Daahyeh (GB), went on to finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita for trainer Roger Varian. Varian was represented this year by Nazuna (IRE), who finished a gallant second at 10-1. Alba Rose (GB) stayed on to finish third for trainer Mark Johnston.
Isabella Giles (11-5) finished the 7 furlongs in 1:22:55 over a course listed as good.
As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders’ Cup will pay the entry fees for Isabella Giles to start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which will be run at 1-mile over the Keeneland turf course. Breeders’ Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must already be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by the Championships’ pre-entry deadline of Oct. 26 to receive the rewards.
