Just Wonderful Pulls Away in Stretch to Win Shadwell Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket and Gains Free Berth into Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
NEWMARKET, SUFFOLK, U.K. (September 28, 2018) – Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier’s Just Wonderful, ridden by Ryan Moore, pulled away from eight rivals inside the final furlong to win the seven-furlong, $135,000 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes (G2) at Newmaket by 1 ¾ lengths over Dandhu (GB) and earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf through the international Breeders’ Cup Challenge.
The Breeders' Cup Challenge is an international series of 85 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Nov. 2-3.
Just Wonderful becomes the third filly to earn a “Win and You’re In” berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, a Grade 1, one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies, which will be one of five Juvenile races to the be run at Churchill Downs as a part of the Future Stars Friday program on the Nov. 2 opening day of the World Championships. The first two qualifiers into the Juvenile Fillies Turf were Skitter Skatter, who won the Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) at the Curragh on Sept. 16, and La Pelosa (IRE), who captured the Natalma at Woodbine later that day.
Just Wonderful, trained by Aidan O’Brien, has now won three of six starts, including the one-mile Flame of Tara Irish EBF Stakes (G3) at the Curragh on Sept. 1 by 1 ½ lengths. A Kentucky bred daughter of Dansili (GB), Just Wonderful rebounded in today’s Rockfel after finishing seventh in the Moyglare Stud Stakes two weeks ago.
Sent away from the rail as the 7-2 second choice, Just Wonderful tracked behind the 15-8 favored Main Edition (IRE) through the first half of the race. Yourtimeisnow (GB) pressed the pace from the outside, but then suddenly at the furlong pole Just Wonderful quickened and shot past Main Edition to the front and opened a clear advantage to the wire. Dandhu, 12-1, closed for second place followed by Main Edition. Model Guest (GB), Canton Queen (IRE), Dutch Treat (GB), California Love (GB), Yourtimeisnow and Ajrar (GB), completing the order of finish.
Just Wonderful, bred by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt, completed the seven furlongs in 1:25.30 over ground listed as good to firm.
