Sprinters Will Dance in Ballerina Stakes

Outside of the Breeders’ Cup itself, the premier race for older female sprinters on the calendar is the $500,000 Ketel One Ballerina Stakes (G1) over seven furlong at Saratoga. The August 24 race drew a field of seven, including the wickedly quick speedsters Separationofpowers and Come Dancing.
Separationofpowers is two for three at both Saratoga and the distance. She won the Test Stakes (G1) here last summer, defeating fellow entrant Mia Mischief. The Chad Brown-trainee is coming off a win in the seven-furlong Bed o’ Roses (G3) at Belmont June 7, where regular pilot Jose Ortiz steered her to a 4 ¾ length victory. Separationofpowers was a grade 1 winner at two and three and looks to add to that here.
Come Dancing was also a winner here last year, taking an allowance over six furlongs before running fourth in the Shine Again. Since then she has appreciated a cut back in distance, winning the seven-furlong Distaff Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct and the Ruffian (G2) at Belmont before stretching back out to 1 1/16 miles in the Ogden Phipps (G1) on the Belmont Stakes undercard, where she finished second. Carlos Martin trains the five-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon, who gets Javier Castellano for the first time.
Mia Mischief has been second over this course twice, but has finished first or second in four of five tries at the distance. Steve Asmussen traines the $300,000 daughter of Into Mischief. She won the Roxelana at Churchill Downs in June before running fourth in the Honorable Miss (G2) here as the favorite July 24.
The horse that defeated her that day was Minit to Stardom, a lightly-raced daughter of Star Guitar who is six for 10 lifetime and riding a three-race win streak. She was sixth in last year’s Test Stakes behind some of these, but has not been worse than second since then.
Special Relativity will break on the rail and comes in off two straight victories, including the local Shine Again on July 31. Robertino Diodoro trains the four-year-old daughter of Cowboy Cal, who is unbeaten in four starts at Saratoga over the last two seasons. This will be her first try above listed stakes company.
Pacific Gale and Dawn the Destroyer complete the field of seven. Watch the Ballerina Stakes and all the Travers Day action live on TVG.
