A mammoth August 1 card at Saratoga includes five stakes races worth $2 million total. Heading the card is the $750,000 Whitney Stakes (G1) for older horses going 1 1/8 furlongs on the main track.
It is a stellar betting race with four of the five entrants at odds of 9-2 or less. On the outside of the five-horse field is Tom’s d’Etat, considered by many to be the leading Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic prospect. This race is a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In for the Classic.
Al Stall trains Tom’s d’Etat for G M B Racing. The seven-year-old son of Smart Strike has won 11 of his 18 starts for earnings over $1.6 million. He is riding a four-race win streak, including the 2019 Clark Stakes (G1) and most recently the Stephen Foster (G2) at Churchill Downs June 27. Joel Rosario will ride, and Tom’s d’Etat is three for four over the course.
Code of Honor is unbeaten at Saratoga, including last year’s Travers (G1) for trainer Shug McGaughey. John Velazquez will ride the four-year-old son of Noble Mission, who has won half his 12 starts for earnings over $2.4 million. He was most recently third in the Met Mile (G1) at Belmont after winning his seasonal bow.
Improbable comes in off a win in the Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita June 6. The flashy son of City Zip has now earned over $1.1 million for trainer Bob Baffert, and has finished first or second in eight of 12 starts. Irad Ortiz, Jr will be aboard the colt, as he was when Improbable finished fifth but was placed fourth in the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
By My Standards drew the rail. He is the longest shot of the top choices at 9-2, but was stellar earlier this year with three straight wins by open lengths including the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in May. He lost to Tom’s d’Etat in the Stephen Foster last out but ran one of the best races of his career in doing so, and is three for four at the distance.
New York-bred Mr. Buff rounds out the field. The John Kimmel trainee has earned over $1 million the hard way, and although he is an outside he has won nine of 13 at the distance.
