The Road to the 2019 Breeders’ Cup World Championships resumes on this week, heading up to a Saturday that features two new "Win and You're In" Challenge Series prep races, one at venerable Belmont Park and another one at the horseplayers' paradise known as Kentucky Downs.
At Belmont, the $1 million Jockey Club Derby offers an automatic berth to the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf for the winner as a new Challenge Series race. The 1 ½-mile race for 3-year-olds concludes the inaugural Turf Triple series, the first two legs of which were the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes in July and the Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes in August. At Kentucky Downs, the $700,000 Grade 3 Runhappy Turf Sprint is a “Win and You’re In” automatic qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
NBC Sports will broadcast both the Jockey Club Derby and the Runhappy Turf Sprint during a one-and-a-half hour broadcast. The show will air on NBC, running from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Eastern, and also will include a live broadcast of the $750,000 Jockey Club Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont.
Belmont Park begins its fall meet on Friday, Sept. 6, and most of its races through the end of September will air on the "America's Day at the Races" broadcast. That show is produced by NYRA in partnership with FOX Sports and is presented by America's Best Racing, Runhappy, and Claiborne Farm. "America's Day at the Races" airs on FS2 and on various regional channels.
Races from Belmont Park and Kentucky Downs will also be broadcast live on TVG as part of their comprehensive coast-to-coast racing coverage.
A highlight of the week’s radio coverage is “The Winner’s Circle” podcast presented The Stronach Group. The upcoming podcast airs Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. Eastern on SB Nation Radio (subscribe and access past episodes via Apple Podcasts here) and is hosted by Bram Weinstein, with racing analysis from retired Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens. The featured guest for the Sept. 7 show will be announced soon.
