Globetrotter Mishriff (IRE) secured an automatic fees-paid starting position in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) with his triumph in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at England’s York Racecourse Aug. 18. The versatile colt also is under consideration for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).
A glance at Mishriff’s glittery statistics might cause a double take especially with his earnings of more than $15 million. The bulk was gained in February with his score in the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1), known as the world’s richest horse race with $10 million prize to the winner.
Mishriff represents the international flavor of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Born in Ireland and based in England, he has competed in four countries. He has yet to race in North America, but he has a strong connection via his trainer John Gosden, who has won high level races on five continents. A mainstay in Southern California in the 1980s, Gosden won the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) at Hollywood Park with Royal Heroine (IRE). He earned his fifth and most recent Breeders’ Cup victory with Enable (GB) in the 2018 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1). He also won the 2008 Classic with Raven’s Pass, maternal grandfather of Mishriff.
"The great thing about Mishriff is he's very adaptable, be it different trips or different surfaces,” said Ted Voute, racing manager for owner Prince Faisal, in a Racing Post article posted Aug. 25. “But, a lot of it, regarding which races he goes for, will depend on whether he races on next year or whether it is the right time for him to go to stud at the end of this campaign.”
Mishriff was bred by Prince Faisal in the name of his Nawara Stud Limited. He is named for a deceased friend of the Prince.
