Time off and a change in scenery jolted Catapult’s 5-year-old season to a Breeders’ Cup bid. He moved to the west coast and John Sadler’s barn for 2018. In his first race after his 9 ½-month break and relocation, he finished second in an allowance race at Santa Anita, and he followed this with a pair of graded stakes wins at Del Mar: the Eddie Read Stakes and the Del Mar Handicap. He now has a 6-3-1 record from 15 career starts and $621,384 in earnings.
A 21-1 longshot in the Eddie Read, he beat favorite Sharp Samurai by a neck and paid $44 on a $2 bet to win. One month later, his Del Mar Handicap victory was part of a historic day for jockey Drayden Van Dyke: this win was his fifth out of seven for the day, which tied him with Victor Espinoza.
Catapult’s father, Kitten’s Joy, is one of the leading sires in North America. Kitten’s Joy won nine races from 14 starts.
This year, Sadler also sends out likely favorites Accelerate in the Classic, Catalina Cruiser in the Dirt Mile and Selcourt in the Filly and Mare Sprint. He has placed second or third in 12 Breeders’ Cup races and is looking for his first victory in the championship series.
“I’m having a dream meet,” Sadler said after Catapult’s win in the Del Mar Handicap. “We’re winning these big races and getting good trips and I can’t ask for anything more. What’s really nice is all the horses are running well. Everything is working out. I’m very happy with Catapult.”
Owner Woodford Racing was founded by Bill Farish, who manages the daily operations of Lane’s End Farm. He is on the Breeders’ Cup Board of Directors.
