Circus Maximus (IRE), owned by a partnership of Coolmore (Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith) and the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Stables, has been nothing short of consistent at the top level in his career. A son of top stallion Galileo (IRE) with an admirable grinding, battle-loving style, the 4-year-old lost by just a length in Group 1 company as a juvenile before a 3-year-old season that included two Group 1 wins over a mile, topped by a victory in Royal Ascot’s St James’s Palace (G1).
At the end of last season, a slow start prevented him from doing any better than fourth in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), but he returned with a bang in 2020, winning again at Royal Ascot in the prestigious Queen Anne Stakes (G1), a “Win and You’re In,” offering him an automatic berth for a return trip to the Mile.
Since the Royal Ascot race, the Niarchos homebred has finished a fine second to Mohaather (GB) in the Sussex Stakes (G1) and third in France’s Prix Jacques le Marois (G1) and Prix du Moulin (G1). However, he did not like the soft ground in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO (G1) at Ascot on Oct. 17, finishing 10th. But the Aidan O’Brien trainee has earned more than $1.5 million, never ducked a fight or foe and been an exciting horse to watch. On a bittersweet note, his mother, the Group 1-winning Duntle (IRE), a dual Royal Ascot winner herself and accomplished Niarchos color-bearer, died of laminitis one year after foaling Circus Maximus, her only offspring.
O’Brien enters the 2020 Breeders’ Cup with 12 victories, but has never won the Mile.

Last year, Circus Maximus came to the Breeders’ Cup as a closely matched third choice and finished fourth. Now the son of Galileo (Ire) will look to improve on that as he returns for the 2020 edition of the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).
