Leading gate-to-wire and winning in easy fashion, Complexity finished three lengths ahead of the competition in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont, earning the expenses-paid berth to the Sentient Jet Juvenile. His victory in the one-mile test brought the colt’s record to a perfect two for two. His previous win came in a 4 1/2 – length romp in a six-furlong maiden special weight on closing day at Saratoga. Jockey Jose Ortiz was in the irons both trips for trainer Chad Brown and owner Klaravich Stables.
"We have to talk about him now. He won a Grade 1 with the best 2-year-olds we have in New York, and now we have to go compete in the Breeders' Cup with the ones in California and Kentucky and everywhere else,” Ortiz said. “The way he did it was very easy and we're happy with his performance.
The Juvenile is a 1 1/16 mile race.
“He’s just so strong. An outstanding talent. He’s just a rare horse,” Brown said. “Obviously, we're going to the Breeders' Cup if he comes back sound and healthy. We'll try and run two turns, which will be another question mark. It's another sixteenth of a mile, but he's a class horse. Jose gets along with him well, and hopefully he'll get a good trip in [that] race.”
Brown won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in both 2016 and 2017. He is known as a turf expert, and in 2017 he brought his dominance to dirt with Preakness winner Cloud Computing. His ten Breeders’ Cup victories include last year’s edition of the Juvenile with Good Magic, ridden by Ortiz.
Two races before the Champagne Stakes, Ortiz and Brown teamed up to win the Beldame, another “Win and Your In” race, with Wow Cat, qualifying the team for the Distaff.

The prestigious 1 1/16-mile race figures to determine the champion 2-year-old male of 2018, as well as the early favorite for the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and with 14 horses in the field, the pace would probably be heated even if there weren’t an abundance of proven speed horses in the field.
