Sentient Jet Juvenile Division
BreederSF Bloodstock LLC
Purchased for $475,000 at Keeneland, Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hopeful Dueling is held in great regard by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, hence why he would bring a maiden winner off his graduation into the biggest race for 2-year-olds on dirt in the world. Owned by Michael Stinson, Dueling is a little more than meets the eye on paper.
A half-brother to Grade 2-winning and multiple Grade 1-placed juvenile Know More, the gray son of Violence has faced high-class maiden fields in all three tries in California. On his debut, July 21, he chased home Rowayton, his speedy and well-regarded stablemate. On August 18, he was second-best to brilliant Bob Baffert trainee Game Winner. Those two happened to finish 1-2 in the Del Mar Futurity in early September and 1-3 four weeks later in the American Pharoah Stakes.
Dueling, on the other hand, did not jump ranks and went on to Santa Anita to flourish in his two-turn bow, taking a mile maiden special weight by 2¾ widening lengths, while ridden out past the wire nicely by jockey Mike Smith. At that point, it was easy to see why he was the 9-10 favorite over Game Winner five weeks earlier; a foe who is now the favorite for the very race into which he has thrown his hat on November 2.
