Juvenile contender Tight Ten, who has one first and two seconds from three starts, boasts a pedigree that indicates the colt’s best efforts are ahead of him.
The son of Tapit burst on the juvenile scene in June by winning his debut at Churchill Downs, a six-furlong race, by 4 ½ lengths.
Next, trainer Steve Asmussen moved the Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred up in class, entering him in the 6 ½ furlong Saratoga Special on August 12. Tight Ten challenged leader Call Paul in the home stretch and the two exchanged bumps, but he came up one length short, finishing second.
In his last effort, Tight Ten returned to Churchill for the September 15 Iroquois Stakes, stretching out to 1 1/16 miles. His speed and past performance at the track and in stakes company contributed to him going off as the 6-5 favorite. Tight Ten set the pace and led for most of the race until Cairo Cat ran him down in the final few strides. Tight Ten again finished second, this time bested by half a length.
“My horse ran well going around two turns for the first time,” jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. said. “I thought we were going to get there.”
Winchell Thoroughbreds campaigned Tight Ten’s father Tapit, who commands the highest stud fee in the United States. Tapit is the father of many horses who have excelled at the Breeders’ Cup, including Juvenile winner Hansen, Juvenile Fillies winners Stardom Bound and Tapitsfly, Distaff winner Untapable and Dirt Mile winner Tapizar. His sons also include Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist, Creator and Tapwrit.
Winchell Thoroughbreds and Asmussen teamed together for the Untapable and Tapizar wins. Additionally, the Hall of Fame trainer conditioned Breeders’ Cup Classic winners Curlin and Gun Runner. Earlier this year, Asmussen, 52, became the second trainer in North American racing history to saddle 8,000 winners.

The prestigious 1 1/16-mile race figures to determine the champion 2-year-old male of 2018, as well as the early favorite for the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and with 14 horses in the field, the pace would probably be heated even if there weren’t an abundance of proven speed horses in the field.
