Seven Trumpets will feel right at home when he goes in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs because, well, he is home. The three-year-old son of Morning Line is three-for-three under the twin spires, and is also stabled there. It also doesn't hurt that his trainer, Dale Romans, holds the record for the most winners at the storied oval.
The bay colt won his second out at age two at Churchill last fall and has been stakes-placed several times. He just missed by a neck in his season debut in the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct in January, and also finished second in the Dwyer Stakes at Belmont in July and the H. Allen Jerkens at Saratoga in August.
Seven Trumpets ran third in his final prep for the Breeders' Cup in the Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing Sept. 22. Lifetime he has three wins, three seconds and a third from 11 starts.
He was a $45,000 yearling at Keeneland September, then resold at the Ocala Two-year-old In Training sale the next April, bringing $205,000 from West Point Thoroughbreds.
West Point Thoroughbreds has run 17 horses in the Breeders' Cup and they were second last year with Untamed Domain in the Juvenile.
Romans, a native of Louisville, became the winningest trainer in storied history of Churchill Downs Nov. 12, when he saddled his 703th winner there. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott had held the record of 702 wins since 1986.
"I've grown up on the backside of Churchill Downs," said Romans of the record. "It was my playground when I was a kid and I used to always watch Bill Mott win multiple races per day.
“Over the years we became friends. He's called me multiple times and wished me luck. That just shows how classy of a guy he is. I've always told him I want to stand in the winner's circle at Churchill Downs, even if it was for just one day, and say 'no one has visited this spot more than me.' Today, I can officially say that."
Romans has won three Breeders' Cups – 2009 Juvenile Fillies Turf with Tapitsfly, 2011 Mile with Court Vision, and 2012 Turf with Little Mike.
