A half-brother to 2018 TVG Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Game Winner, Flagstaff has come into his own over the past two seasons.
Stepping up to the Grade 1 level for the first time in the 2019 Santa Anita Sprint Championship when making his stakes debut, the gelding finished third to Omaha Beach and that year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) second-place finisher Shancelot. That was all his connections needed to be convinced that the gelding was up to stakes competition and the 7-year-old has raced exclusively in stakes company since then.
Trained by John Sadler for Lane’s End Racing and Hronis Racing, Flagstaff has rewarded the patience of his connections, who waited until May of his 4-year-old year for him to make it to the races – only three months before his future Champion 2-Year-Old brother Game Winner debuted at Del Mar. A year and a half later, Flagstaff scored his first stakes win in the Damascus Stakes.
While the gelding has only won four of his 15 stakes starts, he has finished second or third in eight others. His defining moment came on this year’s Kentucky Derby Day program when he won his first Grade 1 in the Churchill Downs Stakes.
For Lane’s End Racing’s Bill Farish, Flagstaff is the gift that just keeps giving.
“It's really fun to have an older gelding like him. He just keeps coming on big days and winning big races, and it's a lot of fun for everybody involved,” Farish said after Flagstaff’s win in this year’s Commonwealth Stakes (G3) at Keeneland, one start prior to his Churchill victory.
His breeder, Summer Wind Farm, is looking for its second Breeders’ Cup win after his half-brother’s victory in 2018. That was the same year his co-owner, Hronis Racing, scored its first Breeders’ Cup victory when Accelerate won the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
