Subscribing to the “If it isn't broken, don't fix it” theory, trainer Larry Jones wisely decided to leave jockey Sophie Doyle aboard Street Band once she started riding the filly at Fair Grounds last year.
That was late last fall, and all the pair have done since is win four of nine races, three of them graded stakes, including their last – the $1 million Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx – which carried an automatic berth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) as a part of the “Win & You're In” Challenge Series.
Left in their wake in that Sept. 21 victory were four other Grade One winners – Jaywalk, Bellafina, Guarana and Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress.
Jones, his wife Cindy and Ray Francis bred the chestnut filly, and own her with additional partners Medallion Racing and MyRaceHorse Stable.
Doyle, a native of Great Britain, is the daughter of former trainer Jacqueline Doyle and her brother James is among the top riders in Europe. Prior to her relationship with Street Band, Doyle's lone graded stakes win came in 2015 at Keeneland in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) aboard Fioretti.
Jones says Street Band and Doyle are a perfect fit. "She's got that European style and it does good. This filly loves her," he said.
The feeling is mutual. Doyle, who rode this summer at Arlington Park in Illinois, made a six-hour round-trip from there to Churchill Downs to breeze the daughter of Istan on a regular basis. That effort paid off.
“She was a little bit worked up in the paddock and the post parade,” Doyle said. “After she broke from the gate, there was so much speed in the race, I decided that I wasn’t going to rush her off her feet and I’d let her carry me up into the race. I wanted her to creep into the race in her own time.”
The duo was a dozen lengths off the early pace in the Cotillion, and not even visible on the TV screen, before they went to work and started picking off some of the top mares in racing.
“She came up alongside Guarana, matched her, and got her head down,” said Doyle. “She was game all the way to the wire. She’s tough.”
The Cotillion upset victory made Street Band a millionaire, and was her fifth overall win from 12 starts.
