In the department of looks being deceiving, Spiced Perfection could qualify as Exhibit A. Physically, the daughter of Smiling Tiger is a less than intimidating specimen. When the 4-year-old filly starts moving her bay frame in the heat of race battle, however, she becomes a fearsome and gritty presence in a division that lacks for nothing in terms of depth.
After prevailing in her first Graded stakes try, Spiced Perfection has made sure to keep herself in exceptional company and her form at an equally high level. The winner of the 2018 La Brea Stakes (G1) has added victories in this year’s Madison Stakes (G1) and Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) to stay in the thick of the quality-laden female sprint ranks.
A head defeat in the Barbara Fritchie Stakes (G3) Feb. 16 provided Spiced Perfection a jumping off point for her 2019 campaign. Though she has been based primarily in California for the majority of her career, it is the Bluegrass State that has been the setting for some of her best career outings. She toppled reigning Champion Female Sprint champion Shamrock Rose in the TCA, marking a successful rebound following a fourth-place run in Humana Distaff Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs in May.
“She’s got a huge heart. She’s not a big filly. She’s not impressive to look at, but she’s impressive to watch run,” trainer Peter Miller, who has won four Breeders’ Cup races, said after the Madison.
Spiced Perfection’s effort in the TCA may rank as her best yet as she recovered after stumbling badly at the break to get up by a head over Dawn the Destroyer. That win also put her over the $1 million mark in career earnings as she improved her record to eight victories from 18 starts.
“This horse has been great ever since she started racing,” said co-owner Bob Flynn, who campaigns Spiced Perfection along with Wachtel Stable and Peter Deutsch. “Eighteen races now, eight wins and she just never quits. I’ve never had one in the Breeders’ Cup.”

The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint will kick off the action on Saturday, November 2, at Santa Anita Park. Highlighting the entries are a pair of standouts in Covfefe and Come Dancing, who have each won four times this year. Scheduled for race four on the card, the race has drawn a field of 9 horses who are all looking to grab a piece of the $1,000,000 purse in this 7-furlong event.
