Anees was at his best when it mattered the most. As a 30.30-to-1 longshot in a field of 14 in the 1999 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs, Anees was the surprise winner after racing in last place through the first half mile. He was honored with an Eclipse Award as the season’s champion two-year-old male. The accomplishments rewarded the confidence of his trainer Alex Hassinger and owner Prince Ahmed Salmen who raced his horses under the name The Thoroughbred Corp. They recognized Anees as a late developer who had begun his racing career only three months earlier. Anees had scored his first victory in his second lifetime start before finishing third in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita Park a month before the Juvenile. His three-year-old season was highlighted by his third-place effort behind eventual Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park.
