Cajun Beat entered the starting gate for the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park as something of an unknown at odds of nearly 23-1 but just over a minute later, he put himself, trainer Steve Margolis and jockey Cornelio Velasquez on center stage. Racing for Satish Sanan’s Padua Stable and John and Joseph Iracane, Cajun Beat took the lead after a half mile and cruised to a 2 1/4-length victory. He returned to finish fifth in the Sprint at Lone Star Park the following year. In 19 races in four years at the track, Cajun Beat collected $1.1-million while winning seven of 19 starts. His record includes victories in the 2003 Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Sprint at Turfway Park prior to his Breeders’ Cup win and a pair of Grade 3 races the following year.
