Much was expected of Chief’s Crown when the colt launched his career as a 2-year-old in 1984 with trainer Roger Laurin for owner Star Crown Stable, the family of the late Carl Rosen. After three major stakes victories in New York early in his juvenile campaign, Laurin took Chief’s Crown west where he won the Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita as a final tune-up for victory in the first ever Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Hollywood Park. The victory sealed an Eclipse Award title for Chief’s Crown. By most standards, Chief’s Crown had an exceptional 3-year-old season in 1985 with victories in the Flamingo Stakes, Blue Grass Stakes, Travers Stakes and Marlboro Cup, but remains best known in history as the beaten favorite in all three Triple Crown events that spring. In a final chance to end a frustrating season on a high note, Chief’s Crown finished fourth as the favorite behind Proud Truth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
