Sir Michael Soute had crossed the Atlantic to win the 1 1/2 mile Breeders’ Cup Turf twice before, so it wasn’t a large surprise when he did it again with an Irish bred son of Dalakhani named Conduit. Still, the winner of the St. Leger Stakes in Doncaster in his final Breeders’ Cup prep was dismissed at odds of $5.80-1 in a distinguished field of 11 in the $3 million event. Jockey Ryan Moore sat patiently off a torrid pace and split horses in the stretch to win by 1 1/2 lengths in 2:23.42, less than a second off the course record. The 3-year-old’s victory led to an Eclipse Award for Male Turf despite being Conduit’s only North American start. Stoute gave his star some time off and brought him back to race the following season overseas, but some were surprised when he decided to come back to the states to defend his title in 2009 over the same course at Santa Anita. He won it again, his fourth career Group 1 victory, before being sent to stud in Japan at Big Red Farm in Hokkaido.
