The Breeders' Cup Distaff was a triumphant finish to a brilliant year for Canadian favorite Dance Smartly. Charging hard in the middle of the track, Dance Smartly pulled away from the field under jockey Pat Day, winning by a length and a half. She became the first Canadian bred to win a Breeders' Cup race. The Churchill Downs crowd backed her with conviction, as she left the gate at odds of 1-to-2. The Distaff victory capped a perfect three year old season for Dance Smartly, eight races, eight wins. A year before her Distaff victory, she was third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Dance Smartly retired as the leading female money winner in Thoroughbred racing history, earning more than $3.2 million from 12 wins in 17 races. She was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2003.
