It took jockey Richard Migliore more than two decades to get his first Breeders’ Cup victory, but it couldn’t have come in much more dramatic fashion. Sitting 10th entering the stretch, Migliore guided Desert Code to a scintillating come-from-behind victory over Diabolical by a half-length over Santa Anita’s hillside turf course for one of the biggest upsets in Breeders’ Cup history in the first-ever Juvenile Turf. Sent off at odds of $36.50-1 with only one victory on his resume from six career starts, the 4-year-old trained by David Hofmans provided the fifth-largest Cup winning mutual of $75 at the time of the victory. Desert Code covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:11.60 after the early leaders dueled into defeat with a 41.81-second half mile. Desert Code would return to racing in 2009 for Susan Osborne’s Tarabilla Farms, but he was unable to duplicate his 2008 Turf Sprint win and finished 13th in the following edition. The son of E Dubai was retired to stud duty in California at Harris Farms in early 2010.
