Crown Stable’s 4-year-old colt Eillo was sent off the favorite in the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Sprint after posting three straight easy victories in New Jersey and Pennsylvania for veteran trainer Budd Lepman. After opening up a 2 1/2 lengths lead in mid-stretch under jockey Craig Perret, he was all-out to score by a nose in a thrilling finish over Windfields Farm’s Commemorate flying at the finish under Chris McCarron. A son of legendary stallion Mr. Prospector, Eillo was named for owner-breeder Ollie Cohen’s first name, spelled backward. Aside from an seventh place finish the in the Count Fleet Handicap at Oaklawn Park, Eillo raced exclusively at east coast tracks, winning 11 of 15 of those race before the Breeders’ Cup, including a track record performance for six furlongs in the Tallahassee Handicap at Hialeah his first start of 1984.
