Jockey Pat Valenzuela faced a difficult choice soon after the gate opened for the 1992 Juvenile Fillies. His mount, Eliza, bolted out of the gate and battled her rider, who was trying his best to get her to relax. Midway down the backstretch, Valenzuela decided not to fight her any more. She surged to the lead, and held it safe the rest of the way, setting a record for the fastest Juvenile Fillies ever run. Her performance, along with earlier victories in the Alcibiades Stakes and the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes, earned her the Eclipse Award for outstanding two year old filly. At age 30, trainer Alex Hassinger, Jr. won his first Breeders' Cup race just a few months after getting his trainer's license. Hassinger is the nephew of John Gaines, a driving force behind the establishment of the Breeders' Cup.
