Expert Eye (GB) unleashed a strong late rally under Frankie Dettori and claimed the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) by a half-length in the first of two wins for owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms during the 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old British-based colt was making his first U.S. start for Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte.

With Analyze It setting the tempo in the Mile’s 14-horse field, Expert Eye was settled three deep in midpack early while Dettori maintained a stout hold. Into the lane, Dettori moved Expert Eye to the middle of the course for a clear run while Analyze It battled to repel bids from Catapult and Divisidero. Catapult knuckled down to inch past Analyze It nearing the finish but could not hold back Expert Eye, who surged late to prevail in 1:39.80 on good turf.

Analyze It hung on for third, a nose behind Catapult. Favorite Oscar Performance finished last.

Dettori said he was briefly concerned in the stretch when Expert Eye did not immediately respond to his urging.

“He was spinning his wheels and it took him 100 yards to figure out how to run,” Dettori said after the Acclamation colt ultimately carried him to his 13th win at the Championships and second Mile victory after Barathea (IRE) in 1994.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute has won eight Breeders’ Cup races and enjoyed his first Mile win after 11 previous starters in the race.

Expert Eye added a first Grade 1 win to his record in the Mile but showed promise this summer with a third-place finish in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp after a second in the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes. His record includes three group wins, including the Sky Bet City of York (G3) and Jersey Stakes (G3), both during the summer, and the Qatar Vintage Stakes (G2) last year at age 2 when he showed his top-class potential in a 4 1/2-length victory.

After his win in the Mile, Expert Eye earned a spot on the stallion roster at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, where he was slated to stand stud in 2019.
