A champion on two continents in his first season of racing, Johannesburg won all seven of his starts as a 2-year-old, capped by his 1 ½-length victory in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Owned by Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier and trained by Aidan O’Brien, Johannesburg reeled off six straight wins to open his career including a Group 1 stakes in France before setting his sights on New York. Third choice in a field of 12 at odds of 7-to-1, his Juvenile triumph at Belmont Park, coming just six weeks after the terrorist attacks of 9-11, clinched the 2-year-old championship both in North America and Europe. Winless in three starts at 3, including an eighth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Johannesburg went on to become the leading freshman sire of 2006.
