Although Kip Deville finished second in his final prep race in Canada, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and the owners from IEAH Stable still decided to put up a then-exorbitant $300,000 supplemental entry fee to enter the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Mile and it paid off with a hard-fought one-length victory. In one of the most competitive races of the day at Monmouth Park, jockey Cornelio Velasquez saved ground and split horses in the stretch on a course labeled “soft” to get the 8-1 son of lightly regarded Kipling up in time, marking the first victory ever for an Oklahoma bred in a Breeders’ Cup race. He earned $1.5 in total purse money for the gamble. A two-time winner of the Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland and the 2007 Kilroe Handicap at Santa Anita, Kip Deville returned to the Breeders’ Cup Mile as a 5-year-old and finished second to the legendary European miler Goldikova. The two-time Oklahoma bred Horse of the Year was retired, but met an early demise when he was euthanized in 2010 after contracting laminitis.
