With defending Ladies’ Classic heroine Zenyatta reserved to face male rivals in the Classic a day later, trainer John Shirreffs still had a solid contender for the 2009 Ladies’ Classic in Pam and Marty Wygod’s 4-year-old filly Life Is Sweet, an 8-to-1 chance in a field of eight with Garrett Gomez in the saddle. Bred by her owners, Life Is Sweet was a daughter of legendary stallion Storm Cat and had chased her undefeated stablemate Zenyatta home fourth in each of her two stakes starts at Del Mar and Santa Anita leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, but had her day in the spotlight rallying from last to win the Ladies’ Classic going away by 2 1/2 lengths.
