Lure raced three times in the Breeders' Cup Mile for Claiborne Farm, winning the 1992 and 1993 editions of that race. In 1992, Lure broke to the lead soon after the gates opened, and set blistering fractions around the firm Gulfstream Park turf course. He was never headed under jockey Mike Smith, who won by three impressive lengths, smashing the course record in the process. Smith's well timed ride earned him his first Breeders' Cup victory. It was the third Breeders' Cup win for trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey. Lure began his career on dirt, as a strong Kentucky Derby prospect. He won his first race at Saratoga in record time, and won the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in a dead heat with Devil His Due. Plagued by minor injuries, Lure did not make the field in the Kentucky Derby, and spent the rest of his career on grass. He defended his Mile title with an extraordinary effort at Santa Anita in 1993. Starting from the 12th post position, Smith carefully maneuvered Lure to secure the lead on the backstretch and cruised home 1 1/2 lengths in front. Lure returned to the Mile in 1994, for the final race of his career, but his attempt to win three in a row fell short, finishing ninth. It was the only time in 15 turf starts he did not finish first or second.
