Terms like “Peaking at the right time” – “Staying out of trouble” and “Race-riding” could all be applied to Silver Train’s narrow victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The 2005 edition appeared to have a hero in the making with the popular 3-year-old Lost in the Fog, who came into the race with 10 consecutive wins at eight different tracks and deservedly was the odds-on favorite. Silver Train had just two career wins before the Sprint; his prep was a fast victory in the Grade 2 Jerome at a mile at Belmont Park. Seven of the eleven starters encountered trouble, including Lost in the Fog who worked to lead at the head of the stretch. Right with him was Silver Train who surged to the front and under Edgar Prado closed a hole for Taste of Paradise and outlasted him by a head and survived a claim of foul to take the Sprint.
