Tempera, a daughter of 1992 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner A.P. Indy and granddaughter of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, had a family history of success before she even hit the track. Unraced at 2, Tempera won her second career start at Hollywood park in July 2001, following up with a victory in the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar. After running third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante, she was sent to New York for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Sent off at odds of 11-to-1, she outran her stablemate, Imperial Gesture, to win by 1 ½ lengths in 1:41.49, the fastest 1 1/16-mile time in race history. Voted 2-year-old filly champion of 2001, Tempera was euthanized at a Kentucky veterinary clinic after a fever, discovered on the day of the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks where she was one of the favorites, developed into colitis and laminitis.
