Owner Roger Devenport was 82 years old and had been in racing for parts of eight decades when Unbridled Elaine came along and took the octogenarian on the ride of his life. Purchased out of Keeneland’s November mixed sale for $230,000 in 1998, Unbridled Elaine won the Pocahontas Stakes as a 2-year-old and the Iowa Oaks and Grade 2 Monmouth Breeders Cup Oaks at 3, and nearly beat the boys finishing second in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby. Having earned her way to the Breeders’ Cup, she trailed all but one horse in the Distaff with three-eighths of a mile to go, unleashing a thrilling stretch rally to catch Spain and win by a head. Ankle injuries at 4 caused her to be retired with six wins and nearly $1.8 million in purse earnings from 11starts.
