Arklow has been a practice of patience for trainer Brad Cox and owners Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger and Peter Coneway that has produced fruit aplenty in 2019. Massive in size and with a pedigree that could fall on dirt or turf prowess, the son of Arch was originally on the Triple Crown trail of 2017 before he ever won a race. After an eighth in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) at the Fair Grounds, he was tried on turf and the rest is history. He jumped from a Keeneland maiden win in April to a Grade 2 win next out in the American Turf at Churchill Downs.
Arklow tailed off the remainder of the year with two off-the-board runs in New York, but returned anew in 2018, winning an allowance and finishing second in the Muniz Memorial Handicap (G2) before finishing a respectable fourth in the Turf Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day behind Yoshida (JPN). Dropped in class to build his confidence, he won the rich Kentucky Downs Turf Cup (G3) in fine fashion before a second in Keeneland’s Sycamore (G3) and a fourth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) behind Enable (GB), Magical (IRE) and Sadler’s Joy. He finished 1½ lengths ahead of subsequent 2019 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Waldgeist (GB) that day.
This season has gone from the depths to the heights, as he lost his rider in his first start of the year, a Keeneland allowance, but came back unscathed. He returned and hit the board against the best in the older turf division, including seconds in the Man o’ War (G1), Belmont Gold Cup Invitational (G2) and a defense of his Kentucky Turf Cup crown, before roaring back to the winner’s circle last out in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Belmont Park. In the process, he bested Grade 1 winners Channel Maker and Sadler’s Joy in a thrilling three-furlong head-to-head-to-head battle.
Arklow is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Maraud, who pulled off a rare double for their mother when winning the 2018 American Turf. He was a $160,000 Keeneland September 2015 yearling purchase before being turned over to Cox, who has had seven Breeders’ Cup starters, including 2018 Distaff (G1) winner and champion Monomoy Girl. Cox’s horses have never finished worse than sixth, meaning that his starters have yet to fail to receive a check.
Principal Donegal Racing has had 10 starters, seven solely owned, in the Breeders’ Cup. The best finisher in its green and yellow silks has been stable star Keen Ice, who was third behind Arrogate and California Chrome in the epic 2016 renewal of the Classic. Often naming horses with Irish themes, Arklow is a Viking-founded town in County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland and was the sight of some of the bloodiest battles of the 1798 Irish rebellion.
