As one of the most successful Thoroughbred breeding and racing programs operating domestically and abroad, Juddmonte Farm has sent an impressive cavalcade of winners across the finish line and into the winner’s circle.
Among their more recent shining stars is 4-year-old Bonny South, a homebred daughter of Munnings who has earned two graded-stakes wins and just shy of $900,000 in purses for the operation. Having finished outside the top two in only three of her 12 racing starts, there seems to be little doubt that Bonny South has more winning ahead of her.
Trained by Brad Cox, Bonny South impressed early, breaking her maiden at age 2 before jumping up the next season at age 3 to graded-stakes company. A win in the Twinspires.com Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) in March 2020 stamped her a potential contender for that year’s delayed running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1). She would earn a fourth in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) that July, but instead of throwing her hat in the Oaks, connections sent her to the Alabama Stakes (G1) where she ran second to Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Swiss Skydiver.
She would claim runner-up honors in stakes races twice more in 2020 in the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) and the Falls City Stakes (G2) to close out the year.
"At the end of the day, she's a filly that doesn't want to be rushed off her feet," said Cox when describing Bonny South’s training style as a 3-year-old. "She's going to come with a run. She's obviously a very, very nice filly.”
Coming off a nearly five-month hiatus from racing in 2021, the flashy chestnut Bonny South bounced back with a vengeance when she won a gutsy three-way finish by a head in the Baird Doubledogdare Stakes (G3). She has continued to turn in several strong performances at the highest level including a second in the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1) and Personal Ensign Stakes Presented by Lia Infiniti (G1).
A win in this year’s Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) with Bonny South could give trainer Cox his third win in the 1 1/8-mile race. The 2020 Eclipse Award-winning trainer won the race in 2018 and 2020 with two-time champion Monomoy Girl.
Juddmonte has won seven Breeders’ Cup titles in addition to their four Eclipse Award titles for outstanding owner.

No one in the field will duplicate the rare achievement of the namesake of the Personal Ensign Stakes. Then again, that’s no insult to any of the nine starters in Saturday’s stakes at Saratoga Race Course.
