A change of scenery worked wonders for Book Review. The filly, owned and bred by Gary and Mary West, made the first nine starts of her career for trainer Chad Brown on the East Coast and only finished worse than third twice. Transferred to the West Coast stable of trainer Bob Baffert, Book Review promptly became a Grade 1 winner in her first California outing, the La Brea Stakes on Dec. 26, defeating a field that included champion My Miss Aurelia. Since then, she has finished second in both the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes and Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes, and scored a 2 1/2 length win in the Grade 2 A Gleam Handicap. She earned an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint with the latter victory, which came off a five-month layoff.
