Catalina Cruiser is pointing for a second try at Breeders’ Cup glory one year after suffering his only career loss to date in the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs as the favorite. He took another step towards his return to racing’s championship stage July 20 when he won the San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar for the second time. Last year, Catalina Cruiser used the San Diego to establish himself as a divisional leader in the older horse division. That triumph, in his third career start and stakes debut, gave his connections great satisfaction after believing in his ability for so long. “We've loved this horse from day one,” trainer John Sadler said at the time. “He's showed a lot of potential, but we've had to be patient with him. Today, he showed us what we thought he could do.” His promise came at a cost of $370,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale and he has now earned far more than that on the track. One race prior to the San Diego, he won the True North Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park in his 2019 debut, signaling that he is ready for another try in the Breeders’ Cup. Last year, he left the starting gate a step slow and veered out late in the Dirt Mile. “The Breeders' Cup race was tough last year, but sometimes that happens when they just need a little break—rest and reset,” co-owner Stephanie Hronis said after the True North. “That's where John Sadler is great. He's patient with the horses and he can back them up, shift the gears down a little bit, then builds them back up again.”

Even though two-time defending Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Roy H will miss out on a chance to secure a historic three-peat, this year’s 36th renewal of the $2 million Sprint on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park should still feature as much firepower at the top as almost any race held during the two-day World Championships.
