There is definitely truth to the old saying “patience is a virtue.” Case in point – Coal Front, who is pointing for the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).
The almost black son of Stay Thirsty out of the Mineshaft mare Miner's Secret was unraced as a 2-year-old. At age 3, he showed he was a real racehorse, winning four of five including a Grade two and a Grade three.
Then, Coal Front was found to have an injury after the Gallant Bob Stakes (G3) in September of 2017 and was put on the shelf. He didn't race again until more than a year later, but he's proven to be very much worth the wait since his return, with four wins from seven starts. This year alone, at age 5, he's earned over $1.3 million.
The Todd Pletcher trainee tried two turns for the first time this February. Starting from post 14, he dueled early, took control on the second turn and held on to win the Razorback Handicap (G3) in his first start of the year.
Coal Front took his show on the road next, flying to the United Arab Emirates to run at Meydan, where he wore down Heavy Metal in deep stretch to capture the Godolphin Mile Sponsored By Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City - District One (G2).
“The horse felt great for me and he broke well, which was important. I wanted to be on or near to the lead and it worked out perfectly,” said jockey Jose Ortiz, who was riding in Meydan for the first time. “I knew I had to be patient to time my run for home. My horse dug in for me.”
Coal Front's last prep for the Dirt Mile was a win Sept. 21, when he captured the Parx Dirt Mile Stakes.
Owned by Robert LaPenta and Head of Plains Partners, Coal Front was $575,000 purchase at Ocala Breeders' Sale's Two-year-you In-Training Sale.
