PRE-ENTRIES

Crystal Ocean (GB)

Crystal Ocean (GB) has earned the No. 1 position for both the fifth and sixth editions of the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2019.

In 17 starts, the European finished first or second in every race with the exception of two third place efforts.

In his last two performances, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (G1) and the Juddmonte International Stakes, Crystal Ocean engaged in epic stretch battles that led to two of the best finishes seen anywhere in the world this year. At the wire, Crystal Ocean fell short by a neck and a head.

Unraced outside of Great Britain, the 5-year-old earned an expenses-paid berth in the Longines Turf by winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (G1), a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” challenge series race. He was pre-entered in this race last year but was unable to make the trip after a training setback. This year, he secured his spot by winning in a torrential downpour by 1 ¼ lengths.

"He's as tough as any of them and such an honest horse," trainer Sir Michael Stoute said.

He trains Crystal Ocean for Sir Evelyn De Rothschild. Stoute’s other clients include Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Khalid  Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and Godolphin Racing, owned by the ruling family of Dubai.

Jockey James Doyle is the son of former trainer Jacqueline Doyle. In 2004, Doyle rode Somayda for his mother in his first career start. Since 2015, he has been a retained jockey for Godolphin. His sister Sophie Doyle has been riding in America since 2013.

"Crystal Ocean always brings his 'A' game,” Doyle said. “Even in conditions that are a little bit difficult for him, he still gives his all. We're lucky to have him."

Crystal Ocean’s name is a blend of his parents’ names: Irish champion Sea the Stars and Crystal Star. He is a half-brother to champion and opponent Sea of Class.

De Rothschild has contemplated retiring Crystal Ocean to stud at the end of the year.
