Her 2019 campaign has only yielded one victory to date, but the Dawn the Destroyer has rarely let a major test go by without solidifying herself as a major threat in the female sprint ranks.
The Stonestreet Stables homebred has had a bit of a bridesmaid complexion in this her 5-year-old season as she has dropped her last six starts, but she has only finished worse than third once during that span. Dawn the Destroyer began the year with a win in the seven-furlong Interborough Stakes at Aqueduct Jan. 25 before recording back-to-back third-place efforts in the Barbara Fritchie Stakes (G3) and Distaff Handicap (G3).
The lone time the daughter of Speightstown was outside of the top three this year came when she crossed the wire fourth in the May 11 Vagrancy Handicap (G3). Following another third-place finish in the Bed o’ Roses Invitational Stakes June 7, Dawn the Destroyer outran her double-digit odds to finish second in the Ketel One Ballerina Stakes (G1) at Saratoga and was closing with authority en route to falling a head short of race winner Spiced Perfection in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Oct. 5.
“Seven-eighths is right up her alley,” said Roger Horgan, assistant to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. “Six furlongs (in the TCA) was too short for her.”
Two of Dawn the Destroyer’s four career wins have come at seven-furlongs, which is the distance of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
Dawn the Destroyer will be attempting to give her trainer his first Breeders’ Cup triumph since saddling Tamarkuz in the 2016 Dirt Mile. McLaughlin has three Breeders’ Cup victories total including the 2006 Classic with future Hall of Famer Invasor (ARG).
Stonestreet, which was founded by the late Jess Jackson of Kendall-Jackson Winery fame and presently operated by his wife Barbara Banke, has yet to win when solely owning a horse from eight tries, including second-place finishers Valadorna (2016 Juvenile Fillies) and Rachel’s Valentina (2015 Juvenile Fillies). In partnership, it won the 2007 Classic with Curlin, 2011 Juvenile Fillies with My Miss Aurelia and 2017 Juvenile with Good Magic.

The Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint will kick off the action on Saturday, November 2, at Santa Anita Park. Highlighting the entries are a pair of standouts in Covfefe and Come Dancing, who have each won four times this year. Scheduled for race four on the card, the race has drawn a field of 9 horses who are all looking to grab a piece of the $1,000,000 purse in this 7-furlong event.

All of the Breeders’ Cup prep races are now done. It’s almost a crime to call these rich graded stakes a prep race for anything. On their merit alone they are all worth winning.
