Japan’s promising 3-year-old Grenadier Guards (JPN) has earned more than $1.2 million in just seven starts in his native country, while proving one of the more exciting milers around.
Beautifully bred, his sire is wonder-horse Frankel (GB) and his dam is the Chad Brown-trained 2015 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) winner Wavell Avenue. The bay colt was bred by Northern Racing in Japan and is owned by Sunday Racing — all part of the impressive operation of Katsumi Yoshida, who purchased Wavell Avenue privately following her runner-up effort in the 2016 Filly & Mare Sprint.
Grenadier Guards began his career with three maiden races between July and November of his juvenile year in 2020, winning in the third over 7 furlongs at Hanshin in a rapid time of 1:20.40. Next out, six weeks later, he won Japan’s top 2-year-old race, the Group 1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes over the same course, but a furlong farther and in another swift clocking of 1:32.30 for a mile.
This season, in just three starts, the bay colt has placed three times, including the prestigious Grade 1 NHK Mile in May.
