By My Standards
Jockey (from last start)
DamA Jealous Woman
In a 17-race career in which he has earned more than $2.2 million in purses, 5-year-old By My Standards certainly has always strived to raise the bar on the racetrack. Competing consistently at the highest levels, he has finished off the board only four times in his racing career with all of those coming in Grade 1 tests.
By My Standards, trained by Bret Calhoun, made his initial starts at age 2, but did not hit his best stride until age 3 when he broke his maiden and scored in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds within the span of just more than a month. That race would be a jumping off point for the horse for the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) where he placed 11th.
With the Kentucky Derby in the rearview mirror, By My Standards was given a break and returned at age 4 and turned in what would be his most successful season to date. By My Standards earned clear victories in the New Orleans Classic (G2), Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and Alysheba Stakes Presented by Sentient Jet (G2). His first trip to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships would come that fall at Keeneland in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), but he had a bumpy trip from the gate and was unable to recover.
By My Standards added yet another stakes win this year in the Oaklawn Mile in which he edged his rivals by a nose and then went on to finish second in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap (G1). He could give the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic a second try or attempt to follow in the footsteps of his father Goldencents in the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1).
Goldencents provides By My Standards with a strong genetic link to the Breeders’ Cup as the stallion was a two-time winner of the Dirt Mile. Trainer Calhoun also has a history of success in the World Championships, having won both the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) with Chamberlain Bridge and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) with Dubai Majesty in 2010. Dubai Majesty was later awarded the title of champion female sprinter.
By My Standards is campaigned by Chester Thomas’ Allied Racing Stable and now Spendthrift Farm. The farm, which stands Goldencents, came aboard ahead of the 2021 season. He was a $150,000 purchase by Thomas at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training in 2018.

The Whitney is a “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic via the Challenge Series Presented by America’s Best Racing, which means that the winner of Saturday’s race will receive an expenses-paid berth to this year’s Longines Classic Nov. 6 at Del Mar.
