Ollie's Candy has shown the racing surface doesn't matter to her. Whether it’s dirt, grass, or all-weather synthetic, she runs well over them all. The one thing that is constant every time she breaks out of the starting gate on any surface is her will to win.
Her first Grade one stakes win, which also earned her a spot in the starting gate for the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), was a prime example of that grit.
In the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar in late July, on the dirt for the first time since last summer, she seized control in the first turn before favorite Secret Spice pounced on her and looked like she was going to roll on by in midstretch. Ollie's Candy had other plans though, and battled back like a champ to notch the win by a head.
"I was just letting her do her thing; reins were dangling,” winning rider Kent Desormeaux said. “At the quarter pole, I picked her up and she did the rest. That other mare got in front of us, but my mare is a fighter. She wants to win.”
The bay filly races for her breeders Paul and Karen Eggert, who named the daughter of Candy Ride (ARG) after their youngest daughter Ollie. Ollie’s Candy has four wins and three seconds from eight career starts. She won her first two starts last year on Golden Gate's all-weather synthetic surface; won the Summer Oaks (G2) on the dirt, and was second both in the San Clemente (G2) and Del Mar Oaks (G1) on the turf.
"She is a really nice filly who ran in some big races here last year,” said trainer John Sadler, who took over the training from Northern California-based William Moray Jr. “She came my way in really good shape and I’ve just kind of carried on for what he did last year.”
