A lot of horseplayers were kicking themselves on opening day of the Keeneland 2013 Fall Meet because they had just watched Sum of the Parts come home like a house afire to win the G3 Phoenix Stakes – a race he also won in 2012. The Keeneland loving son of 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Speightstown returned a hefty $27.20 win price for those smart enough to bet him. Trainer Tom Amoss said after the victory that the colt “is the most athletic horse I've trained. He's the quickest horse I've ever trained out of the gate.” While the Phoenix was his first victory this year, Sum of the Parts had five wins from 14 starts to his credit going into Keeneland’s stake. In 2012, he won not only the Phoenix, but the Red Legend Stakes and Tom Ridge Stakes, and was second in the Grove and Kip Deville Stakes. He now heads to California looking to better his fourth-place finish last year when he faded after battling for the lead through wicked fractions with eventual winner Trinniberg.
