Totally Boss has an unusual training routine. He spends part of his time at trainer Rusty Arnold’s Keeneland barn on Rice Road and his other time at Margaux Farm in nearby Midway, Kentucky. Margaux, a sanctioned training facility that provides official workout times, is owned by Jim and Susan Hill, who have campaigned Totally Boss since purchasing him for $180,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The routine has worked wonders for the 4-year-old Street Boss gelding as evidenced by his triumph in the Runhappy Turf Sprint Stakes (G3) at Kentucky Downs in September.
Totally Boss prepped for the Runhappy Turf Sprint with a victory in its preview race Aug. 4 at Ellis Park. Arnold credits Jim Hill with selecting the race instead of his own idea of sending him to Saratoga. With the Turf Sprint score, Totally Boss is guaranteed a spot in the Breeders’ Cup starting gate and would have been eligible for a $1 million bonus if he had entered and won the Woodford Stakes at Keeneland Oct. 5. However, his connections opted to bypass the race.
“It was tempting, but we don't want to jam too much into this horse,” multi-generational Kentucky horsemen Arnold told Paulick Report in an article posted Sept. 9.
Totally Boss’ father is Street Boss, who finished third in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita. He was bred by Mike Pressley of Henderson, Kentucky, who purchased his dam Totally Tucker as a yearling and won two races with her. She also is the mother of Super Steed, winner of the 2019 Southwest Stakes for Pressley and co-owner Steed Jackson.
