THE 1987 BREEDERS’ CUP

Hollywood Park

November 21, 1987

The Breeders’ Cup returned to site of its inaugural running. There was high drama in the Breeders’ Cup Turf as Theatrical, trained by Bill Mott, defeated Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino by a head. But the real drama took place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic where  winners of the past two Kentucky Derbies, Ferdinand and Alysheba, battled to the wire together  with Ferdinand, ridden by 56-year-old Hall of Famer Bill Shoemaker, prevailing by a nose and clinching the Horse of the Year title.
