THE 1994 BREEDERS’ CUP

Churchill Downs

November 5, 1994

Europeans took a liking to the Churchill Downs turf course for the 11th Breeders’ Cup as Barathea won the Mile and Tikkanen captured the Turf.  One Dreamer, at 47-1, beat an outstanding field in the Distaff. Pat Day won both 2-year-old races:  a thrilling finish aboard Flanders in the Juvenile Fillies and later on Timber Country in the Juvenile. In the Classic, Dramatic Gold led the field into the stretch, but track announcer Tom Durkin intoned, “There is cause for Concern,” meaning a very fast closing 3-year-old named Concern, ridden by Jerry Bailey, who drove to the front and defeated Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Tabasco Cat for the victory.
